The History of The Roxy In London, UK Venue

The Roxy was a nightclub and concert venue located at 358-360 Brixton Road, Brixton, in south London, England. It was a popular venue for live music in the 1970s and 1980s, and hosted performances by many notable artists, including Bob Marley, U2, Duran Duran, The Police, The Clash, The Jam, David Bowie, Lou Reed, Iggy Pop, and R.E.M.

The Roxy was originally a cinema called the Astoria Picture Theatre, which opened in 1912. In 1972, the cinema closed and the building was converted into a nightclub by entrepreneur Andrew Czezowski. He named the club "The Roxy" after the infamous Roxy Theatre in Los Angeles, California.

The Roxy quickly became a popular venue for live music, and its stage was graced by many of the most important artists of the era. In addition to the aforementioned artists, The Roxy also hosted performances by The Buzzcocks, Generation X, The Damned, Siouxsie and the Banshees, and The Pretenders.

In 1980, The Roxy was sold to new owners, who renamed it "The Venue." The Venue continued to host live music, but it never quite achieved the same level of popularity as The Roxy. In 1986, The Venue closed its doors for good.

The building that housed The Roxy has since been demolished and replaced by a new development. However, The Roxy's legacy lives on in the many memories of its former patrons.
